El Paso, TX:  Last weekend saw the beginning of football here in the Borderland for 5A and 6A schools.  Below is our assessment from the Bel Air vs. Coronado scrimmages.

Here are a few takeaways that we have from the Bel Air and Coronado High School scrimmages.

Varsity Scrimmage: Bel Air’s offense showed a lot of flashes throughout the scrimmage as they were able to move the ball down the field during their no huddle offensive sets.  However, Borderland Sports Report #8 prospect Adrian Parsons failed to impress as he appeared to be trying to do too much out on the field and not taking what the defense was giving him.  There were multiple occasions where you could clearly see him pressing trying to make something out of nothing, as the scrimmage went- on.  Yes this is the preseason and yes it was a scrimmage, but, this Bel Air offense still has a long way to go if they expect to fulfill their preseason expectations and make the next step toward the top of the district rankings; and it all starts with the play of Adrian Parsons and his decision making at the quarterback position.

Another bright spot for this Bel Air offense was #25 Sebastian De la Torre — tailback.  Very explosive runner with great size, strength, and great hands out of the backfield.

The Bel Air Defense looks to be much improved with some solid play.  It will be interesting to see how this unit holds up once offenses start clicking as regular season play gets going and progresses.

Coronado’s defense looked very solid during the scrimmage.

On the offensive size, Coronado showed flashes as they were able to move the ball down the field with their running game and some big passing plays as the WRs were able to make some big plays in the passing game.  In the running game, #21 looks like he could be a bright spot for this offense as he broke off several long runs to show off his big play capabilities from the backfield.

JV Scrimmage: Bel Air’s offense look very impressive as they had several positions where they moved the ball down the field at will.  However, you will see a reoccurring theme here with all of the Bel Air Quarterbacks as Eugenio Fernandez was trying to do too much at times but showed some promise and flashes.  The offensive line had their moment, but like in all three scrimmages, the defense was well ahead of the offense.

Coronado quarterback, #11 showed a lot of promise with his legs and his arm play on slants making quick decisions and getting the ball out to the open receiver.   Deeper throws were seemed to be an issue as he floated the ball on many passes down the field.  Quarterback #14 also showed so good promise with his arm play and decision making.  #55 showed a lot of promise using his size speed to take advantage of running lanes out of the tailback position.  The offensive line did a great job of winning at the snap and pushing the Bel Air Defensive line forward creating running lanes for their running backs

9th Grade Scrimmage: Bel Air has a very bright future and a star on the rise in Chris Davis.  This young man went out and showed why he was on our initial watchlist or the class of 2024.  Jack Bumgardner showcase flashes of potential at the quarterback position but appeared to be trying to do too much.  He missed several makable Yes this was the first practice so we expect to see a better decision making and maturity from his as this season progresses and as he continues to develop.  Bel Air’s defense looked really solid and should really help carry his team to a very good season.  #3 from the Bel Air 9th grade team is a huge back who is going to be a punishing runner that is going to be a load to bring down from the backfield.

Coronado’s offense showed some flashes, especially from the running back position The defense was also impressive.  Several promising prospects on this team with tight end #32 showing really good hands and blocking ability to go along with his size.  However, their offensive line has a long way to go if this team wishes to run the ball out of the power I formation that they used during the scrimmage.
