EL PASO, Texas — One of the longest district win streaks in El Paso high school basketball history ended Tuesday night.
Burges Boys' Basketball team defeated Chapin 56–50, snapping Chapin’s 59-game districty winning streak — a run that dated back to January 30, 2021.
The Huskies’ last district loss came during the 2020-21 season when Andress efeated them 56–41.
For nearly five years, Chapin had not lost a district contest.
Until now.
Balanced Scoring Lifts Burges
Burges won with depth and execution.
Six players scored eight or more points:
• Alex Bermudez — 10
• Anthony Rubio — 9
• Jacob Liverio — 9
• Jojo Thomas — 8
• Hayden Cordova — 8
• Miguel Chavez — 8
The Mustangs spread the floor, controlled tempo, and forced Chapin to defend multiple scoring threats all night.
In the fourth quarter, Burges stayed composed — valuing possessions and closing the game with disciplined defense.
What This Means for El Paso District Basketball
Chapin’s 59-game district streak spanned multiple graduating classes, playoff runs, and realignment cycles. It established the Huskies as the standard in district play.
Burges just changed the conversation.
With playoffs approaching, the district race tightens. Momentum shifts. Seeding implications grow.
And for the first time since 2021, Chapin enters the stretch run coming off a district loss.
Despite the loss, Chapin remains in first place with a one-game lead and two games remaining on the schedule — both matchups they are favored in.
The Huskies still control their path to a district title.
For Burges, however, Tuesday’s victory proves the gap has narrowed. Even if the standings remain unchanged, the perception of district dominance has shifted.
With postseason play approaching, momentum matters.
The streak is over, but the standard remains. Chapin still controls its path to a district title with two games left on the schedule. Burges, however, proved Tuesday night that the margin has narrowed. In February basketball, perception shifts quickly — and the postseason is built on moments like this.
