POWER RANKINGS

Week of February 2 - 8, 2026

With most teams have three (3) games left in the regular season, it's starting to heat up here in the Borderland.  Teams are evaluated based on recent results, strength of schedule, and overall consistency.

Compiled weekly by Borderland Sports Report analysts.

Presented by:

Montwood Rams (12 - 0, 24 - 5)

Previous Rank: #1

Montwood enters the postseason as the clear standard in the Borderland.

The Rams finished a perfect 12-0 in 6A district play and carry a 15-game winning streak into the playoffs. In one of the region’s most competitive classifications, Montwood didn’t just win — they controlled.

Defensively disciplined. Balanced offensively. Composed in late-game situations.

Their 24-5 overall record reflects consistency, but the 15-game streak reflects something more dangerous — momentum at the right time of year.

Montwood isn’t peaking early.  They’re peaking now.

If playoff basketball is about execution and composure, Montwood checks every box entering the bracket.

Americas Trail Blazers (11 - 1, 27 - 4)

Previous Rank: #3

Americas finishes the regular season at No. 2 — and their résumé backs it up.

The Trailblazers secured the outright 1-5A district championship and, more importantly, have defeated every other top team in El Paso this season. Their only slip-up within the city came once.

That matters.

At 27-4 overall, Americas hasn’t just beaten teams — they’ve beaten the right teams.

They don’t rely on depth. Instead, they lean into identity. Their aggressive backcourt defense applies constant pressure, forcing turnovers and dictating tempo. Opponents don’t get comfortable. They don’t get clean entries. They don’t get easy possessions.

Americas wins games by making other teams uncomfortable.

Closing the season with a district-clinching win over then-#10 Hanks solidified their standing. The body of work, especially against top competition, moves them ahead of Burges in the final rankings.

In postseason basketball, résumé and defensive identity travel.

Americas has both.

Burges Mustangs (10 - 0, 23 - 7)

Previous Rank: #2

Burges enters the postseason as one of the hottest teams in the Borderland.

The Mustangs ride a 16-game winning streak into the playoffs after completing a perfect 10-0 district campaign. They closed the regular season with a win over then-#8 Chapin, adding another quality result to an already impressive stretch run.

Burges doesn’t just win — they control pace, defend with discipline, and execute late.

Their undefeated district run speaks to consistency. Their 16-game streak speaks to momentum.

So why No. 3?

Americas’ head-to-head résumé against top El Paso teams gives them a slight edge in the final rankings. But make no mistake — Burges is fully capable of making the deepest playoff run of any team in the field.

Momentum is real this time of year.

And right now, Burges has plenty of it.

Franklin Cougars (10 - 2, 21 - 10)

Previous Rank: #4

Franklin quietly enters the postseason as one of the most in-form teams in the Borderland.

The Cougars finished second in District 1-6A behind Montwood, posting a strong 10-2 district record and 21-10 overall mark. More telling, however, is their late-season surge — Franklin is 15-2 over its last 17 games and carries a four-game winning streak into the playoffs.

That kind of trajectory matters.

Competing in 6A every night builds toughness, and Franklin has shown they can adjust, defend, and close games against high-level competition. Their consistency down the stretch keeps them firmly inside the Top 5.

They may not carry the undefeated label of Montwood or Burges, but their recent form suggests they’re capable of making serious noise in the postseason.

If momentum is the measuring stick, Franklin belongs in the conversation.

Eastwood Troopers (8 - 4, 22 - 8)

Previous Rank: #6

Eastwood earns the No. 5 spot in the final BSR girls rankings after a season of clearly established pecking order in 6A.

The Troopers’ only losses to El Paso competition came at the hands of the teams ranked above them — Americas, Montwood, and Franklin (twice). Outside of those matchups, Eastwood didn’t just win — they handled every opponent in their district by an average of 20+ points per game.

That kind of dominance against the rest of the field matters.

Eastwood wasn’t beaten by El Paso teams; they were outclassed only by the very top tier. In a district where tight games and competitive balance can define playoff positioning, Eastwood showed both scoring firepower and consistency.

In postseason matchups, teams that can:

     • grind out wins,

     • maintain large margins,

     • and only lose to elite competition

often become danderous spoilers.

Eastwood fits that profile — a team with a clear hierarchy in their losses but an overwhelming command of everyone else.

They may sit at No. 5, but they’re capable of making a deep playoff run if they match their regular-season offensive rhythm and defensive effort.

It’s whether they can break through against the very top tier when it matters most.

Bel Air Highlanders (9 - 3, 17 - 11)

Previous Rank: #7

Bel Air enters the postseason as one of the most intriguing teams in the Borderland.

The Highlanders finished tied for second in District 2-5A and closed the regular season strong — winners of 9 of their last 11 games, including a three-game winning streak heading into the playoffs.

But their defining moment?

They are the only El Paso team to defeat Americas this season — snapping the Trailblazers’ 44-game winning streak in the process.

That result carries weight.

Bel Air proved they can compete with — and beat — one of the city’s elite programs. While their overall record may not match the Top 5 teams, their late-season form and signature win justify their placement inside the Top 10.

They may be seeded outside the top tier, but they’re not a team anyone wants to see in a postseason bracket.

Mountain View Lobos (9 - 1, 21 - 12)

Previous Rank: #5

Mountain View enters the postseason at No. 7 after a strong but unfinished district push.

Prior to Tuesday night, the Lobos were undefeated in district play and in position to secure the outright 1-4A championship. Instead, a loss to Riverside forced them to share the title and shifted their positioning in the final rankings.

Mountain View finishes 9-1 in district and 21-12 overall.

Despite the setback, their recent form cannot be ignored. They are 13-3 over their last 16 games and had won eight straight before Tuesday’s loss. That consistency down the stretch keeps them firmly inside the Top 10.

The loss to a now 16-15 Riverside team is what ultimately separates them from the Top 5. In a ranking that weighs résumé and late-season momentum, finishing the job matters.

Still, Mountain View has shown they can string together wins and control games when in rhythm. With postseason basketball now underway, they remain a dangerous 4A contender capable of making a deep run.

Irvin Rockets (7 - 1, 20 - 9)

Previous Rank: # 10

Irvin checks in at No. 8 after one of the most impressive program turnarounds in the Borderland.

The Golden Knights finished 7-1 in district play, capturing first place and posting a 20-9 overall record. They close the regular season 9-2 down the stretch — a strong finish that reinforces their consistency.

But the bigger story is the growth.

Last season, Irvin finished 10-19.  The year before that, 5-20.

Now, they are district champions with 20 wins.

That kind of progression doesn’t happen by accident. It reflects development, confidence, and a program moving in the right direction.

While they may not carry the high-profile résumé of the Top 5 teams, Irvin earned its place in the rankings through steady improvement and disciplined district play.

From rebuilding to championship — Irvin’s postseason appearance represents more than just a seed.

It represents progress.

Andress Golden Eagles (6 - 4, 17 - 12)

Previous Rank: # --

Andress returns to the BSR Top 10 for the first time since the January 12 rankings — and this time, it’s backed by tangible progress.

The Eagles finished third in District 1-5A with a 6-4 district record and close the regular season at 17-12 overall. They enter the postseason riding a two-game winning streak and have gone 9-6 over their last 15 games.

More importantly, this marks Andress’ first winning season since the 2022-23 campaign.

That matters.

Consistency hasn’t always been there in recent seasons, but this year the Eagles stabilized, competed in one of the tougher 5A districts, and earned their way back into postseason relevance.

This isn’t just a return to the rankings.

It’s a return to form.

Andress may not carry the dominant résumé of the Top 5, but they’ve shown steady growth, composure late in the year, and the ability to close games when it counts.

For a program working back toward sustained success, this season represents a meaningful step forward.

Hanks Knights (9 - 3, 18 - 10)

Previous Rank: #9

Hanks rounds out the final BSR Girls Top 10 after a competitive season in District 2-5A.

The Knights finished tied for second in district play at 9-3 and posted an 18-10 overall record. They closed the season 10-5 and remained in the district championship conversation until the final matchup against Americas.

That deciding loss ultimately kept them from securing the title — but it doesn’t erase the body of work.

Hanks proved they can compete at a high level throughout the season and stayed consistent in one of the more balanced 5A districts. Their ability to stay in the race until the final stretch earns them a place in the Top 10 entering postseason play.

They may sit at No. 10, but they’re battle-tested — and that matters this time of year.
